What is culture? How do we define it and how does it change? We’ll explore different categories of culture, like low culture, high culture, and sub-cultures. We'll also revisit our founding theories to consider both a structural functionalist and a conflict theory perspective on what cultures mean for society. Vocal trio Culture helped define the sound and style of Rastafarian roots reggae, thanks largely to charismatic singer, songwriter, and leader Joseph Hill. True to their name, Culture's material was devoted almost exclusively to spiritual, social, and political messages, and Hill delivered them with a fervent intensity that grouped him with Rastafarian militants like Burning Spear and Black Uhuru. Their classic debut, Two Sevens Clash, is still considered a roots reggae landmark, and most of their other late-'70s output maintains a similarly high standard. After a hiatus, Culture returned in the mid-'80s with a lighter, more polished sound that drew from more eclectic musical sources. Yet the force of their message never softened, and they soldiered on into the new millennium.

JUSTICE SOUND 904 444 9444 Hill (22 January 1949 – 19 August 2006) was the lead singer and songwriter for the roots reggae group Culture, most famous for their 1977 hit Two Sevens Clash , but also well known for their International Herb single. Hill recorded twenty-two albums. Joseph Hill was born in 1949 in Linstead, a town in Saint Catherine Parish in the southeast of Jamaica.[1][2] He was raised in a Christian family and began singing in church at the age of six.[3] Within two years he was making his own musical instruments.[3] After leaving home he came into contact with Rastafarians and adopted the faith.[3] He began his career in the late 1960s as a percussionist, recording with the Studio One house band the Soul Defenders.[2] He also worked as a sound system deejay, and began performing as a backing vocalist, leading to his singles Behold the Land and Take Me Girl in the early 1970s.[4] In the early 70s Hill performed with two groups that included future reggae star Glen Washington – C35 Incorporated and Stepping Stone.[citation needed] He performed regularly on the hotel circuit, but had his greatest success with the group Culture. Culture[edit] Main article: Culture (band) Hill formed Culture in 1976, and had early success with the prophetic Two Sevens Clash , predicting apocalypse on 7 July 1977. During the seventies the group had a string of highly successful singles for producers Joe Gibbs and Sonia Pottinger including the song 'Two Sevens Clash' which made its mark on both Jamaica and the United Kingdom. It was named by Rolling Stone magazine in 2002 as one of the '50 Coolest Records' – the only single artist reggae album to make the list. The group also had a hit with 'Stop Fussing and Fighting', a song that addressed the chaotic political climate of the late 1970s and the attempt on Bob Marley's life. Joseph Hill and Culture developed a reputation as a performing group after a performance at the 'One Love Peace Concert' in 1978, and was soon regularly touring the United States, Europe and Africa. In recent years the group continued to perform at least one hundred concerts each year – with Hill's wife Pauline performing road manager duties. Hill was a presence on stage – part deejay as he directed his band to reconfigure songs on stage and part teacher as he commented on Jamaican history and current political issues. In his lyrics, Hill often explored how the legacy of slavery continued to have an influence on Jamaican citizens. Yet, what made Culture unique was that Hill always tempered his messages by having a smile on his lips and a dance in his feet. He was never without a good joke at hand. Hill had received a number of honours; an induction into the Jamaican Reggae Walk of Fame and a 2005 Independence Award presented by the Prime Minister of Jamaica. In 2005 hew received the Culture Shock Bronze Medal in recognition of his contribution to Jamaican music.[5] As a member of the Rastafari movement, Joseph Hill was a devoted worshipper of emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia. Indeed, Hill's honorific/nickname, Keeper of Zion Gate reflects his position as one of reggae's and Rastafari's greatest voices. China Blames Filipino Political Culture For Duterte's Troubles, But Does Nothing To Change It SUBSCRIBE my channel here: G+ here: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Photographer: SeongJoon Cho/Bloomberg The Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has had a lot of troubles at home lately, and China blames the Filipino political culture for it. That’s according to a Globaltimes editorial, which argues that Duterte’s troubles stem from “a volatile political culture.”  That’s true to some extent. Coups and assassinations have for decades been a feature of the daily Filipino life. And so has been another villain – corruption, which prevents Filipinos from escaping poverty and getting a taste of prosperity. Investors have taken notice. The Philippines market has underperformed emerging markets. The Philippines' Has Underperformed EEMKoyfin Meanwhile, China has done nothing to help its new ally to fight corruption. That’s according to a recently published Transparency International Report, which finds that China has done nothing to fight bribery in the countries it trades with. There’s a familiar reason for the persistence of corruption in The Philippines: every new “revolution” promises to fight the mechanisms that nurture and perpetuate corruption before assuming office. But after taking office, it uses these same mechanisms to advance its own interests rather than the interests of the masses. Duterte’s ‘revolution’ isn’t an exception to this rule. It began with the promise to free the Philippines from corruption and drug-related violence, two vices that have been preventing the country from sustaining economic growth, and escaping from poverty and inequality. But neither of those two promises was fulfilled. The Philippines remains roughly as corrupt as before Duterte assumed office. In fact, the Philippines is getting more corrupt under Duterte, dropping 13 notches in the 2017 Corruption Index published recently by Transparency International. Meanwhile, Filipinos feel roughly as safe walking alone at night in the streets in 2017 as t. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
